How to Learn BIM for MEP as an Architect or a Civil Engineer

Civil Engineers and Architects often end up learning MEP BIM Modeling the wrong way as training service providers offer combination courses these days to ramp up their sales. Please do not see BIM as just series of modeling tools, you have understand the design and the process as final deliverable will not be a 3D model, it’ll be real built asset. Use the tips below to understand the correct way, as we see it.

  • Learn fundamentals of design & rinstallation of HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing & Fire Protection Systems so that you are aware of what you’ll be modeling.

  • Learn installation & design codes to make sure everything you’ll model can be validated against NBCs

  • Go through product specifications & their parameters under each discipline to understand their impact in design process

  • Understand & outline how MEP - Building Information Modeling process can benefit the project in the different RIBA PoW Stages for design, analysis, planning, coordination, installation, checking and facilities management. Far more important is to understand the process rather than BIM tools.

  • Learn MEP BIM authoring tools like Revit MEP by learning not only to use them in model development but also for design / calculations & analysis and later for installation & fabrication

  • Learn BIM coordination tools like Solibri, Navisworks Manage in order to check for clashes and resolve any design coordination issues

  • Learn to collaborate with other consultants over the cloud with the use of BIM Collaborate Pro

  • Learn to use Excel & PowerBi for use alongside Revit for Bill of Materials generation.

  • You can also learn to use Dynamo for automating your design or using it for data populating purposes.
